Project 1 - Environment

Fanyun Peng, Xiaojie Yang, Mehtap Aydin

Brainstorming
  • Unexpected Response

  • Differentiating object responses (Exploration of everyday invisible interactions)

  • Use of everyday space in an unexpected way (Street, restroom, bathroom, kitchen, market, etc.)

  • Relationship between human and their familiar environments.

Environment

The environment should be the user’s own space or zone, such as your own bedroom.

The world is a fictional world that we created.

In this world, objects have senses like creatures have, and there is a special relationship between people and their own objects.

People can have the same senses at the same time the objects are having.

Concept question

We define a place as our own place is because we have always been in interaction with our surroundings.

What if we could feel what we have done to the objects with our 6 senses. How would be the user experience turn into full body experience?

Interaction with your workspace

Touch          Wind            Water

  • Relationship with your own space.

  • Sense of belonging.

  • Personalized relationship with the space.

  • Improvement of the personalized relationship, interactions, experiences with the space.

Process

Precedents

MIT Media Lab, Yedan Qian,Pattie Maes,Xin Liu

Prototype 1 - conceptual

We got some feedbacks from our viewers:

1. we should narrow down to a specific space;

2. the interaction need more logic connections

Prototype 2 - founctional

Techniques:

Arduino + Processing

photoresistor sensor

when people pour coke into glasses, they will hear the sound inside of glasses.

sound sensor + DC motor

when people blow out candle, they will feel the wind.

touch sensor + servo motor

when people touch the mouse, they will feel be touched.

First we decide the place that each part of our interaction will happen and then locate it;

using cardboard to make a work desk with box below to hide all of Arduino and sensors;

also the black board is to block this space from the outside.

Final for second prototype

User testing

Feedbacks:

  1. It is kind of hard to know what interaction they should do.

  2. People feel surprised when they got the response from the space.

  3. The user can feel some deeper relationship between the space and her/himself.

  4. The wind is not strong enough.

Demo:

Prototype 3 - final

We take off the black board, and hide all the kits under the desk we made to make it like a real workspace.

We also make some changes of interaction, like when we touch the mouse we will hear some laughter to replace the touch that may scare people.
