Assignment-3 Instruction Sets for Strangers

Window Filter

Concept Statement : We are studying the strangers' behaviors in the park;

                                 Because we want to find out how do people interact with views;

In order to understand different reactions that people get from different filter views.

Location Report (Sep. 22-Sep. 26)

Pier a  park, Hoboken, New Jersey

Two weeks ago, we should have observed and intervened at A Pier Park in Hoboken, New Jersey. The location is near the Path station and NJ transit Station. It is actually intersection spot between Hoboken and Newport. So, plenty of local residents, including some locals from newport community,  all are coming here and enjoy pleasure moment in free time.

Lighthose, New Port, New Jersey

unfortunately before we started our installation, some trains crashed in Hoboken Station. We have to change our location and continue doing our project, which is in Newport Lighthouse Park. The Newport Lighthouse Park is along the Hudson River, and Starbucks is nearby. Around 6PM, the sunset from the river is slightly and warmly. So each night and weekends, locals are willing to take a walk with family or dogs along the Hudson River, enjoy themselves in nature.

Propose non-textual instruction sets for a public space (Sep. 27-Sep. 28)

Virtual Screen
The proposal of virtual screen in front of railings is to see the view in a unique way. People in front of screen (sitting on the steps) can be recognized as real audience; people passing through the screen can be recognized as actors in the film. Everybody in the park can be settled as  a character. As someone said, “When you watch the scenery from the bridge,
The sightseer watchers you from the balcony.”
Criteria for success:
Some people are willing to  sit down on the steps.
Some people should pass through behind the screen.
People are pleasure to be took photos(we need to record their reaction)

Filter Door
The proposal of filter door is to have peculiar experience viewing the scenery. The door can be decorated by some colorful veils, plastic or other fabric. People can randomly open doors to see the view. There is no instruction to guide them how to open doors. We except people can play with those doors.

Counting machine for runner
The proposal of counting machine for runner is to build connection with those runners. (Because there are many people working out here) The machine is like a counter, when a runner cross a certain spot, the machine will add 1 and then there is a sounder which will announce like “You are the 1st runner here.”
Criteria for success:
We can make ourself as counting machine to count the number.
Runner accept this sound.

Finally, our team chose the second one proposal.

Prototyping, Testing, Iterating, Documenting (Sep. 29-Oct. 10)

Prototyping (Sep.29-Oct.1)

We changed the filter door to the filter window. Use some transparent plastic, grids fabric and clothing hangers to build our filter installation.

Sign for pull up&down

We picked three kinds of color filters with strings, hanging with various strings, which can pull up and down. We also attached "hands" prompt to make easier understand.

Testing (Oct.1-Oct.2)

Results

Responses

  • 1. welcoming installation(transparent/open)

  • 2. looks pretty

  • 3. do not want to touch  (may cause troubles/destroy others stuffs)

  • 4. hard to understand

Iterating (Oct.3 -Oct.8)

We cut our filter into pieces, which can slide horizontally and we also add camera frame to our installation. In front of our window, we use draw a circle to remind people they could stand before the window and look views through the random filters.

Retesting (Oct.8-Oct.9)

In our testing process, we put the window in two places, one is in Newport and one is in Hoboken.

In the final testing, we were facing with the terrible weather. The strong wind always blowed our filter slides in one side. Due to raining outside in the morning, people were not willing to hang out in wet weather.
First of all, we didn't consider the weather can destroy our window.
Secondly,  we didn't make a right user target for our installation. Most of people passing by this place are runners. Working out people don't like to stop to touch the window.
Thirdly, if the first people touches the window, some followers would repeat again.
In this testing result, there are 150 people passing by and 67 of them give a glimpse of window. 6 people stand in the circle to use our filter.
